How to avoid a DUI charge
Getting out of a DUI charge is not easy, but it’s not impossible either. Many different factors – such as inaccurate breathalyzer or blood test results, errors in police reporting and personal medical conditions – may all be used as evidence to get your charges dropped.
However, the easiest way to avoid getting a DUI conviction is not to end up with a charge. This doesn’t mean you have to give up hanging out with your friends and colleagues or avoid alcoholic beverages altogether. But responsible planning and decision making can help you avoid the risk of a potential DUI:
Designated driver
Most people who find themselves with DUI charges do not plan to get them. Whether you plan to indulge in drinking or not, you should always have friends or colleagues you can count on as designated/sober drivers. Consider having a sober friend to drive when you are in danger of inebriation.
Rideshare
If you do not have access to designated motorists, consider using a rideshare service like Uber, Lyft or a taxi. Ridesharing has been demonstrated to significantly reduce instances of drunk-driving accidents. You may also want to consider using public transportation if you are not visibly intoxicated and able to navigate it.
Personal limit
It is not always easy to know when you are under the influence of alcohol. Sometimes the onset of inebriation is gradual. Other times, it may happen faster. Regardless of how you feel or the occasion, try to limit your alcohol consumption when you’re out. For example, if you normally have three glasses of wine at business dinners, consider two instead.
Remember, law enforcement only needs probable cause to apprehend you for a DUI. The moment you get into your vehicle after consuming alcohol, you put yourself at risk. Err on the side of caution and use the above pointers to avoid DUI charges.
