Violent crimes: A major reduction in Florida

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2017 | Violent Crimes

Violent crimes include things such as aggravated assault, robbery and murder. These crimes are particularly heinous, which is why they’re looked down on and penalized harshly. If you’re accused of one of these crimes or others that fall under the classification, it’s in your best interests to develop a defense as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The good news for people in Florida is that the number of violent crimes has reduced significantly over the last 20 years. According to statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, violent crimes have decreased 40 percent between 1996 and 2016.

The statistics show that there were 147,425 violent crimes reported in 1996. In 2016, there were only 88,501. That’s a significant reduction, lowering the total number of offenses per 100,000 to 439.2 per 100,000. On top of that, Florida’s population as actually increased by 39.8 percent, making the reduction particularly impressive.

One of the most significant reductions is the number of aggravated assaults taking place. In 1996, there were 95,688. In 2016, there were 59,678 reported cases. Robberies also reduced significantly from 41,643 cases in 1996 to 20,132 in 2016.

The harshness by which the law handles these cases is part of the reason why the reduction in crimes has occurred. As someone who now faces penalties with a possible conviction, it’s in your best interests to work with someone who can help you devise a solid defense. You want to be certain that you get experienced legal guidance and advice so that you know all of the legal options available in your case.
